LOOKING FOR A THERAPIST IN CINCINNATI, OHIO?

Here’s what to expect at Conscious Roots Counseling

At first, tending to your mental health might feel a bit like a dentist appointment you’ve been avoiding, but over time, therapy can feel good, and even liberating.

Whether you’ve experienced significant trauma or are “just” feeling down or lost, you’re not the only person who’s felt this way, and we’re here to help.

There’s no one-size-fits-all way to do therapy, so our therapists are intentionally skilled in working with specific approaches and age groups.

We’re experienced in therapy for children, adolescents, and adults, and our clinical expertise includes talk therapy, play therapy, and EMDR. We’ve got you covered.

NEW TO THERAPY?

NEW TO THERAPY?

Here’s how to get started.

After contacting us and getting matched with a therapist, you’ll complete some electronic paperwork at home before your first visit.

For adults, our questionnaires include questions about your reasons for seeking counseling, family and partner relationships, significant events or stressors throughout your life, history of therapy, goals for therapy, and medical conditions.

For parents completing paperwork for their children, we ask about reasons for seeking therapy, history of concern, your child’s education, the relationship between your child and family members, and development questions (like when your child first walked, talked, etc.)

Then you’re ready to come in!

What to expect in your first session

Your first session is an opportunity to begin getting to know each other, and to explore clarifying questions about the info you already provided.

FOR ADULTS…
We’ll talk through the responses you shared on your initial questionnaire and cover some helpful information like:

  • Our confidentiality agreement

  • Why you’re interested in therapy

  • Relevant past experiences

  • Expectations of therapy or specific needs/wants

  • The frequency of sessions that will best fit your needs

FOR ADOLESCENTS…
We usually give the client the option of meeting with the therapist alone or with their parents present. We can even split up the session to be a combination of just the parents, just the client, and everyone together.

FOR CHILDREN…
We usually see parents without your child first. (It’s hard to freely say everything you may need to share about your concerns if your kiddo is 2 feet away from you!)

You can expect your therapist to take notes, but we’re not writing every detail or “analyzing” anything! Notes help us write your after-visit summary, and to remember your responses so we can start building the therapeutic relationship.

First sessions are usually an hour. This is usually not enough time to explain everything about yourself or your experiences—and that’s okay! Throughout your therapy journey your therapist will get to understand you more and more.

So you’ve started therapy… now what?

Therapy works best if you have a trusting and positive relationship with your therapist. We recommend having about 2-3 sessions with your therapist before you decide if they’re a right fit for you.

When getting started working together, you can expect weekly sessions and then, over time, you and your therapist might begin to space appointments further apart.

Therapy isn’t a quick fix, so committing to steady, consistent appointments over at least a few months is typically the minimum amount of time you’ll need to see improvements in your mental health.

About Conscious Roots Counseling

SUPPORT IS HERE.

It takes courage to turn around and face life’s tougher chapters—but once you can identify the root cause of your thoughts and feelings, you can change how you move forward.

That’s what we’re here to help you do at Conscious Roots, with compassion, respect, and lots of support. Whether you’re processing past trauma, looking for expert help to support your child’s mental health, or need to get out of your own head and explore your feelings, therapy can be a powerful source of relief.

Ultimately, we hope to work ourselves out of a job—not because we don’t love what we do, but because we want to help you move forward feeling more free, resilient, and confident in managing your own mental health.

When you’ve processed your past experiences and learned new support strategies, you can ride life’s waves of discomfort without getting pulled under.

And after you’ve unearthed the roots of the weeds that have been weighing you down, you have so much more room in your life to grow flowers.

We ask a lot of questions, but we’re here to answer them, too!

GETTING STARTED

  • The short answer: just about everyone can benefit from therapy!

But here’s the longer answer: trust your intuition. If you’re struggling to manage stress or anxiety, feel lingering sadness or depression, are dealing with a big life transition, have problems concentrating or sleeping, are processing grief or trauma, or you’re simply feeling disconnected, consider reaching out. There are so many different reasons that people seek out therapy, and your feelings are valid.

  • It's common to feel some guilt about tending to your own needs, but remember, taking care of yourself is, well, essential. When you’re in a stronger place mentally and emotionally, you’re better equipped to support your loved ones and to move forward in a healthy way. (You’ve probably heard the “put your own oxygen mask on first” principle a million times, but it really is true.)

  • Opening up to someone new, especially a therapist, can feel nerve wracking—and honestly, maybe even a bit weird. (Where else in life do you meet a stranger and spend the whole conversation talking about your personal thoughts and feelings?) But after about 2-3 sessions, it starts to feel more comfortable, and even liberating. We love meeting clients who have never been to therapy before! You might just find it’s easier than you thought to open up.

  • Absolutely. You deserve to feel respected, seen, and understood by your therapist, without fear that they’re going to judge you or your identity. When we work together, you’re free and encouraged to be your authentic self.

  • It’s normal to worry that digging into your past or your feelings might stir up some tough emotions. But think of it like tidying up a messy room (relatable? No judgment). It might look worse before it gets better, and that’s okay. Our therapists are here to guide you through that process safely, making sure you’re not tackling everything all at once. It’s all about moving at a pace that feels right for you.

  • Absolutely! If you have a particular therapist in mind, please let us know which therapist you would prefer to work with when you reach out.

If you aren’t sure which therapist would be the best fit for you, or you’d like to prioritize a therapist with the soonest availability, our Assistant Sarah can help guide you after you reach out!

Our feelings won’t get hurt if later on you want to switch therapists. It’s much more important to us that you feel comfortable and connected to your therapist. In fact, studies show that of all the therapy techniques available, the thing that matters most in a successful therapy experience is the relationship you have with your therapist.

If you’re feeling stuck, here’s a tip for getting started. Simply say: “I’m becoming curious about how my therapy experience would change if I met with one of your team members.” This will help us begin the conversation!

INSURANCE
& PAYMENT

  • We only accept CareSource plans. If this is not your insurance, services will be billed directly to you according to our private pay therapy rates. We can offer you “superbills'' that can be submitted to your insurance for possible reimbursement. We know this may sound confusing—please reach out and we can help explain this process!

  • If you do not have CareSource insurance, services will be billed directly to you according to our private pay therapy rates.

Our 2024 therapy rates are as follows:

    • Intake session = $150

    • 45-50 minute individual session = $125

    • Reports = $30

    • Phone calls after the first 10 min = $50

    • No show/Late cancel charge = $125

    • Court appearances = $3,000

Depending on your insurance plan’s out-of-network benefits, it’s possible that your insurance may reimburse you for some of the cost of therapy.

To determine your out-of-network benefits, you can use this guide. Feel free to also reach out and we can explain how out-of-network benefits work.

SESSIONS
& VISITS

  • We typically meet in person at our Cincinnati/Blue Ash office at 4424 Carver Woods Dr, Suite 100, 45242.

We do offer virtual sessions if preferred, although most of our clients meet in person and use the virtual option for the occasional time they cannot come to our offices.

Children’s play therapy happens in person, but we often work with parents virtually. We understand that driving back and forth to appointments can be a challenge when many family members are receiving therapy. Sometimes we even meet parents for a virtual session during your child’s nap time!

  • You’re always in charge of your experience at Conscious Roots Counseling. Over time, you may be curious about decreasing the frequency of your sessions, pausing them, or stopping them, and you’re highly encouraged to bring that up with your therapist to make a plan.

You won’t offend your therapist by voicing any struggles you’re having about attending therapy, or by sharing that you feel capable of moving on and “graduating” from therapy. We want to accommodate your needs, and being able to talk through topics that might feel tricky is an essential part of therapy.

Tending to your mental health starts here.
